One of the most significant things that grandparents can do is pray — consistently and specifically — for their grandchildren.
“Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the night watches! Pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord! Lift your hands to him for the lives of your [grand]children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street.” Lamentations 2:19
Why is Prayer Important?
Prayer is a biblical command. Notice the directives in Lamentations 2:19 – “cry out,” “pour out your heart,” and “Lift your hands to him.”
Prayer can stop Satan’s schemes and powers toward my grandchildren. In Ephesians 6:12, we read of a very real battle taking place in the spiritual realm. Our prayers are our weapon — in our personal battle and on behalf of our grandchildren in theirs.
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Prayer has an eternal impact on the lives of our grandchildren. We see in Paul’s letter to young Timothy that the preceding generations wield influence.
I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. 2 Timothy 1:5
Prayer is my response to God’s invitation. God invites me to:
- open the door.
- spend precious time with Him; sitting, talking, sharing, listening.
- bring Him my concerns; including my concerns about my grandchildren.
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. Revelation 3:20
Prayer permits me to release to God what I cannot control myself. It takes me out of the driver’s seat (a seat I was never meant to have).
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7
And the list doesn’t stop there…
More Benefits of Praying for Our Grandchildren
Prayer:
- helps equip my grandchildren to stand fast in the faith.
- allows God to accomplish His purpose in and through them.
- helps me to be involved in the lives of my grandchildren.
- enables me to play a major part in stabilizing and influencing the lives of my grandchildren.
- closes the distance gap.
- strengthens my relationship with my grandchildren.
- is the single, greatest thing I can do to express my love for my grandchildren.
- is one of the greatest investments I will ever make into their lives.
- draws me closer to God and nourishes my spirit.
- displays the faithfulness, sovereignty, and goodness of God.

Thank you for the invitation! I will certainly drop by for a cup of inspiration and a visit with you.
Prayer IS powerful, and prayers for our children and grandchildren – vital!! I can only imagine the effect of hundreds, thousands, or even millions of grandparents united in prayer for their grandchildren. May the observance of a Grandparents’ Day of Prayer bring glory to God and have an untold impact on the generations.
Deborah
